Its a really interesting, almost paradox of time management.But doesnt it just create a big mountain of impossible things?The reality is, the mountain was always there, Crenshaw said. The mountain didnt go away by breaking it up into 20 different things What we want to do is we want to have it in one spot, and then we need to budget enough time in your week to go through it. Just bring it all to zero.Crenshaw said that tackling the mountain might be difficult at first that might take 10 extra hours but there are rewards. Once you reach zero, he says, its all maintenance. Its going to be so much easier to stay on top of it on a weekly basis.2. Banish your to-do lists and break out the calendarTo-do lists have taken something of a beating lately, and Crenshaw is no fan.The interesting thing about the to-do list is it represents a lack of control, he said. Its great because youre keeping track of what needs to get done, but theres no control on the calendar when its going to happen.If you start using a calendar instead, you take control. You say, Heres what I need to do and this is when I have allotted the time to do it. So now you are the one in charge of the when. A to-do list is completely at the mercy of whatever else happens in your day.The other part of the problem with the to-do list, Crenshaw told Ladders, is that most people have a time horizon of just about two weeks.A time horizon, he explained, is how far into the future you feel you have enough time to get things done.People are unused to thinking far into the future and therefore, most peoples line of thought is, Can I get in done in the next two weeks?This is a stressful way to operate, putting us in a constant mindset that our to-do lists must get accomplished in two weeks. In fact, we have much more time to work with.With a calendar, Crenshaw says, you can open your time horizon up to two months or two years. Now, you feel so much more relaxed. Conduct gives you, the employer, greater discretion in terms of according the appropriate level of corrective action.The three-step model under the substand ard job performance category above is not necessarily required when dealing with difficult employees who engage in misconduct.In those cases, employers have a lot more discretion to progress immediately to a final written warning (or even immediate employee termination) for a first offense.Misconduct infractions that typically rise to the level of immediate termination, or summary offenses, include theft, embezzlement, and forgery.Thats easy enough to understand, but an outburst of insubordination, an offensive rumormonger caught in the act, or someone shouting obscenities at a peer may easily qualify for a final written warning based solely on the egregious nature of their actions even if this is a first-time occurrence.In situations like this, youre placing the individual in question on notice that this is a third rail issue. The message engage in this type of behavior again and youll be firing yourself.4. For example, his gift is making people laugh. Maybe your gift is problem-solving. Maybe its being able to listen to people and hear what theyre really saying. Or maybe your listening skills could improve, but youre a fantastic speaker. Harvey says your gift is not your past, present, or future job. If youre a lawyer, your gift isnt for law, but it could be negotiating, finding creative solutions, or being able to analyze information. When youre looking around, trying to figure out what your gift is, dont end your search at the office. You should also examine your relationships, your communities, your hobbies- basically, every aspect of your life.Its connected to you whether you are working or vacationing, whether you are with the family or even all alone, he explains in his book.To figure out your gift, try this Write down all of your successes, both personal and career-related. Then, see if theres a common theme. If theres one talent or skill that r uns through most of your achievements, chances are thats your gift. For example, youve been praised for your ability to calm down angry co-workers or clients. Outside of work, youve become the go-to person in your neighborhood, family, or friend group to resolve conflicts. Your gift is for mediation.You can also ask your friends, family, and co-workers what abilities they associate with you. The 20-year-old had spent his childhood in Madison, Wis., building models of spacecraft and futuristic vehicles with whatever he could find around the house. He started a mechanical engineering club at his high school. And when he enrolled in the University of Wisconsin-Madisons School of Engineering three years ago, he hoped to someday design cars. But along the way, he realized that mechanical engineering skills alone would not get him where he wanted to go. His pals who recently graduated with mechanical engineering degrees had landed jobs that required them to program computers and robots, and to perform other tasks that were related more to the computerized world of the Internet of Things (IoT) than to traditional mechanical engineering. I met a lot of people who had figured out what IoT was and wanted to do something real with it, he said. But neither he nor his friends had much opportunity in their mechanical engineering classes to learn about IoT-related technologies and how to apply them to real-world solutions. In the emerging IoT ecosystem, new technologies like embedded sensors make it possible for just about any type of device, machine, or component to collect data and send and receive information over the Internet. Data analytics and cloud computing then turn that data into something valuable. Startups dont have the money to burn on training Kayla Matheus, a Yaletrained mechanical engineer who who invented MOTI (pictured) Almost every industry is now trying to leverage those technologies to improve business and manufacturing operations, monitor and diagnose how well machines are functioning and forge closer collaboration between humans and machines. This is called the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) or Industry 4.0, and companies desperately need a new type of engineer to help them create it. Until a few years ago, industry expected entry-level mechanical engineers to focus on mechanical engineering. But today almost every job they take onfrom designing a medical implant to engineering a turbine jet enginealso requires an IoT-related skill, says Peter Hirst, associate dean of executive education at MIT Sloan School of Management. IoT is everywhere now, he said. The job function might not be characterized as IoT, although many of those jobs include some implementation of sensors, data measurements, and connectivity. Hirst also serves as director of the IoT Talent Consortium, an industry-academic group that develops new ways of training engineers, technicians and others to meet the needs of IoT employers. Hes in constant contact with C-level executives from a variety of technology, engineering, and science companies, who say their biggest challenge today is finding the talent to fill IIoT-related jobs. Its no longer you and 10 mechanical engineers working on a project, its you and a designer and a data scientist and a customer expert, he said. Those are the kinds of abilities that people historically learned by osmosis and experience over a 10- or 15-year career. Now were saying we need people to come out of school with those abilities. But most are not. This has created a gap between the skills that industry needs to develop the technologies, products, and services that make companies profitable and competitive, and the skills that entry-level mechanical engineers typically bring to the table. For these reasons, companies and engineering educators are looking at new ways to train young engineers in the skills needed to bridge the gap. Finding a unicorn For at least 40 years, mechanical engineering fundamentals have been taught in much the same way. The core classes stuck to the basics every mechanical engineer must know, such as material, fluids, thermodynamics, measurements, and instrumentation. That satisfied industry, and thats what professors on a tenure track had incentives to teach. While industry has complained over the years about young engineers lack of job preparation in some areas of technology, most of the skills they needed were closely related to traditional mechanical engineering and could be honed early in a career. Large companies with deep pockets were also able to pick up the slack and teach engineers skills they didnt learn in school. Some still do. GE, for example, looks for candidates with deep knowledge in specific areas and have a commitment for life-long learning, said Stephan Billers, GEs chief manufacturing scientist, who directs a team that develops IoT-related software and hardware to digitize manufacturing processes. ;custompagebreak; GE also spends billions on ongoing business and technical training initiatives, internship and co-op programs, and online courses. We hire talent, not skills, Billers said. But its difficult for small companies to offer the same opportunities. Startups dont have the money to burn on training, said Kayla Matheus, a Yale-trained mechanical engineer who invented MOTI, an IoT device designed to help people develop better habits, and founded a San Francisco-based company of the same name to commercialize it. Many companies, especially those that cant afford to train young employees, expect universities to do a better job teaching mechanical engineering students practical IoT skills. Matheuss startup is no exception. Its namesake product has as much to do with software as hardware. She and her small team develop cloud-based databases, manage firmware, and have created a smart-phone app, and they integrate all these technologies into the devices ecosystem. Matheus hopes the young engineers who apply to her company will have a working knowledge of these skills their first day on the job. A little marketing, supply chain, and overseas manufacturing experience would also be nice. We need people who can wear many different hats but who also have focused experience, Matheus said. Were looking for a unicorn. Real-world skills To prepare for these new jobs, students need a deeper understanding of the cornerstones of IoT, including data analytics, networking, cloud computing, mechatronics (a combination of mechanical, electrical, computer, and controls engineering), automation, and robotics. Young engineers dont need to be crack computer programmers, Hirst and others said, but they need to have enough working knowledge of other specialties to understand what their co-workers or teammatesfrom designers to data scientists to marketing expertsare actually talking about. To give them that working knowledge, some companies are taking matters into their own hands. Siemens PLM, which sells a suite of software that automates manufacturing processes, donates millions of dollars in IoT-related software, curriculum, and training to more than 3,000 schools, universities and organizations around the world. The company also supports dozens of government, industry, and academic initiatives to provide mechanical and other engineers with the computer-related skills theyll need for IIoT and Industry 4.0 jobs. More real-world activities will help solve some of those challenges we face, said Dora Smith, Siemens PLMs global director of academic programs. ASME, for its part, hosts a series of global engineering competitions called the IShow, challenging young engineers to design a marketable product that will have a social impact. Each year, more of those projects include sensors, connectivity, cloud computing, and other IoT-related technologies, said Mahantesh Hiremath, a distinguished engineer at Space Systems Loral, a satellite builder in Palo Alto, and an ASME Fellow. All those projects on display are very much in tune with what young mechanical engineers will see in the workplace, he said. ASME also offers national and local professional development courses and seminars on IoT-related components like sensors and big data. It also works with academia to shape STEM curricula from kindergarten through university. Think different Training efforts by corporations and organizations can help teach young mechanical engineers how to incorporate IoT technologies on the job. But to properly prepare students for positions created by new IoT technologies, university engineering programs will have to do a better job at contributing, industry and education leaders agree. Raj Veeramani, a University of Wisconsin-Madison professor in the Industrial and Systems Engineering Department, realized that a few years ago. Since then, he and a handful of other thought leaders have been developing better ways to teach and train young engineers to give them IoT skills. One of the best is to have students from different majors collaborate on hands-on projects that include IoT components, Veeramani and others say. For that reason, he and his colleagues launched the IoT Lab two years ago. They saw it as a tech sandbox that would bring together students, including those with nonengineering majors, to explore, innovate and engage in problem solving and entrepreneurship with IoT technology. Veeramani papered the campus with flyers announcing the IoT labs first informational session, which fell on an incredibly cold January night in 2014. It didnt help that he forgot to mention on the flyer that thered be free pizza. I wasnt sure if anyone would show up, he said. Meanwhile, a handful of other university engineering departments have developed similar initiatives. Theyre typically set up in partnership with government or industry, which are turning to universities to understand IoT and figure out how to take advantage of the technologies and related business and marketing strategies. Engineers compete in ASMEs IShow India. The international hardware competition features many solutions that include IoT-related technologies. In these programs, students typically pitch an IoT project or build a solution to a problem posed by a company or government agency. The university supplies the parts, equipment and guidance the student teams need to complete their projects. The energy, knowledge, and ideas fostered by the environment benefit the corporate or government partners as well. They bring together a lot of smart people to make the progress you couldnt do alone or with other private companies, said Daryl Erbs, vice president of technology at Manitowoc Foodservices, one of about 25 companies that have joined the IoT Labs consortium. Each university adds a few twists to differentiate their program. Karthik Ramani, a professor in the School of Engineering at Purdue University, for example, is developing a set of kits for core mechanical engineering classes with all of the basic components students could use to build an IoT-enabled device related to class topics. He also teaches a popular toy design class where he encourages students to build products and develop business models that fit into the IoT ecosystem. On top of that, Ramani started an IoT product-design contest in his mechanical engineering class. If you want to get the best of all worlds, you need expose [students] to different technologies, designs, disciplines, and business models, he said. Thats an interesting concoction that is not found in traditional university settings. A New Direction Back at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, more than 80 students showed up on that cold winter night for the IoT Labs open house. Student interest in IoT has blossomed ever since. At a subsequent open house last fall, more than 280 students from a variety of majors showed up. Today, half of the labs 40 participants are engineers, while the rest are from nonengineering majors, such as computer science and business. About 30 percent are usually women, a much higher percentage than in most engineering-related activities, Veeramani said. Will Caldwell was one of those participants. His frienda nutrition major and cycling enthusiast whose friend had been hit by a carhad inspired him to develop a system that would alert bicyclists of a dangerous traffic condition and help them avoid injury. He thought the IoT lab might help him figure out how to go about it. At the open house, Caldwell hit it off with the other students and made a strong pitch to the judges, who accepted his project, which he eventually called Safe Cycle. The lab, he said, had everything he needed to make his project a reality. It has the newest, coolest stuff, he said, mentioning an Oculus Rift virtual-reality system; Google Glass; drones; plenty of Arduino boards, Raspberry Pi microcomputers, actuators, motors, and sensors; and a huge RFID container packed with past and present projects to inspire new design and technical ideas. ;custompagebreak; During the three months he spent working in the IoT lab, he managed a four-person team that included the nutritionist, along with a mechanical engineering major and an electrical engineering major, both freshman with no project experience. By necessity, each team member did a bit of everything, learning what they needed as they went along. You ended up doing electrical engineering, computer science, design and marketing, Caldwell said. I learned so many things in the lab that I couldnt learn in class. At the end-ofsemester open house, Safe Cycle won an award for Most Potential Impact. And the experience changed Caldwells career path entirely. To develop his interest in IoT, he added a computer science major to his mechanical engineering major and tacked on a minor in electrical engineering to build what amounted to a major in mechatronics. How to Make Your Management Meetings Productive Events How to Make Your Management Meetings Productive Events You do not have to look very far to find articles from experts on time management, accomplished executives and other gurus and pundits decrying meetings and suggesting you avoid, shrink or otherwise dispense with these often laborious corporate time wasters. Nonetheless, sometimes we just have to meet. And yes, there is some great advice available from experts on time management, agenda control and rules of order. The focus here is a bit different, offering some tried-and true-guidance that will help managers turn five common meeting types into painless and productive events.   Five Common Meeting Solutions 1. Eliminate Death by “Around the Table” updates. You know this meeting. Cram eighteen people in a room and then require every person to share an update that typically sounds like an attempt to justify their existence and make a case for their enshrinement in the great employee hall of fame. CEOs and senior leaders are notorious for running these meetings, naively believing that this is a great way for everyone to hear what’s happening across the firm. In reality, people mostly tune out and focus on planning their own update that no one will listen to.   Instead: By all means, get together with your peers, team members or key colleagues, but don’t succumb to the “around the table” approach. Offer information on an exception basis. Share relevant news, including financial results, big customer wins or updates on organization-wide initiatives. Also, extend the offer for individuals to raise important issues. If something noteworthy and not widely known has occurred, someone should share it. If one group needs help from another group, raise the request. Otherwise, do not compel all of the attendees to share. 2. Status meetings in general. These can be brutal time-killers, particularly when they lock-in as recurring events and are poorly managed. Instead: Never call a meeting for something you can look up. Leverage the technology tools of the day to ensure your work teams maintain a current and visible status update where everyone can see it with the click of a mouse. If you must meet cut the planned meeting time in half or, use agile approaches and run short “stand-up” sessions. Be draconian about the digressions and distractions that elongate these sessions. Focus on sharing status and require people to tackle issues outside of this forum. 3. Unstructured brainstorming meetings. Most brainstorming meetings are so poorly facilitated that we end up suppressing ideas, supporting the boss’s idea or generating great lists of cool things on post-its that are never heard nor seen again. Instead: Work to define the brainstorming topic and share it with invitees ahead of the session. Collect their input and consolidate and post it or share it without attribution to the ideas. Use the live session to jump and build on the submitted ideas, adding to the list. Resist the urge to evaluate ideas in this session. Incorporate other techniques that minimize socialization pressures, such as brain-writing. And above all else, consolidate the ideas and create a process to evaluate them as well as to archive them for easy group reference in future sessions and situations. 4. Operations reviews that make the Inquisition look tame. If you have ever suffered through a session where the meeting leader- usually an executive- focuses on either one struggling function or searches for the weak spot in everyone’s presentation and then grill the messengers mercilessly, you know how destructive this format is. Do not perpetuate this process. Instead: keep the deep functional dives and corporate proctology exams private and focus on sharing key operating indicators, problems and opportunities. The group meeting is not the time or place to rip apart an underperforming area or individual. Set up a follow-up meeting on the spot, but do not subject everyone else to your visible cross-examination on this issue. Do not back off on accountability for improvement, but eliminate cruelty and what amounts to public shaming from your meeting management repertoire.   5. Meetings that raise issues demanding spontaneous decisions. Oddly or ironically, the meeting room is one of the worst places for quick decisions. Raising an issue for the first time and calling for a decision puts people on the spot, and they will resent you for using this approach.   Instead: Work unceasingly ahead of group meetings to engage key stakeholders on issues and options. Solicit their input, offer your perspectives and work to broker shared interests. Use the meeting forum to validate the interests of the stakeholders and identify their recommendations. While you may still not get the immediate decision without another step or two, you will have strengthened your working relationships with your pre-session work. The Bottom-Line for Now We are communal creatures by nature and even with a variety of technology tools that enable us to connect without being in the same place, sometimes, it just helps to be face-to-face. Leverage this time wisely and show your respect for participants by producing meetings that minimize time investment and maximize high-quality information sharing in a non-threatening environment.

There are 10 project management knowledge areas covered by the PMBOK ® Guide. They cover each of the 47 project management processes. This article provides a high-level view of each of these areas in relation to what you need to know and do as a project manager. Project Integration Management This is covered first in the PMBOK ® Guide, but it’s about bringing together everything you know so that you are managing your project holistically and not in individual process chunks. Because of that, it’s easier to study this knowledge area last. Skip this section of the book and come back to it later! Project Scope Management The scope is the way to define what your project will deliver. Scope management is all about making sure that everyone is clear about what the project is for and what it includes. It covers collecting requirements and preparing the work breakdown structure. Project Time Management Project time management isn’t about being personally more effective. It relates to how you manage the time people are spending on their project tasks, and how long the project takes overall. This knowledge area helps you understand the activities in the project, the sequence of those activities, and how long they are going to take. It’s also where you prepare your project schedule. Project Cost Management Cost management is, as you’d expect, all about handling the project’s finances. The big activity in this knowledge area is preparing your budget which includes working out how much each task is going to cost and then determining your project’s overall budget forecast. Of course, it covers tracking the project’s expenditure against that budget and making sure that you are still on track not to overspend. Project Quality Management Project quality management is quite a small knowledge area, as it only covers three processes. This area is where you’ll learn about and set up the quality control and quality management activities on your project so that you can be confident the result will meet your customers’ expectations. Project Human Resource Management Project human resource management relates to how you run your project team. First, you have to understand what resources you need to be able to complete your project, then you put your team together. After that, it’s all about managing the people on the team including giving them extra skills to do their jobs, if they need it, and learning how to motivate your team. Project Communications Management Given that a project manager’s job is often said to be about 80% communication, this is another small knowledge area. The three processes are planning, managing and controlling project communications. It’s here that you’ll write your communications plan for the project and monitor all the incoming and outgoing communications. There are strong links with human resource management and stakeholder management too, even if these aren’t explicit as I think they should be in the PMBOK ® Guide. Project Risk Management The first step in project risk management is planning your risk management work, and then you quickly move on to identifying risks and understanding how to assess risks on your project. There is a lot of detail in this knowledge area, specifically around how you perform quantitative and qualitative risk assessments. Risk management isn’t a one-off activity, though, and this knowledge area also covers controlling your project risks going forward through? the project life cycle. Project Procurement Management Procurement management isn’t something that you’ll have to do on all projects, but it is common. This knowledge area supports all your procurement and supplier work from planning what you need to buy, to going through the tendering and purchasing process to managing the work of the supplier and closing the contract when the project is finished. This has strong links to the work of financial tracking on your project and also to performance management. Youll have to manage the performance of your contractors as the project progresses. Project Stakeholder Management The final knowledge area is the most important. This takes you through the journey of identifying stakeholders, understanding their role and needs in the project and ensuring that you can deliver those. I think well see this area develop further in the next edition of the standard. If you can grasp all these knowledge areas, you’ll have everything you need to know as a project manager covered!

But fiction soon collided with reality when the nuclear industry invented a real gadget, nicknamed a Waldo, for the safe manipulation of radioactive materials from a remote location, and a new industry was born. Seventy years later, medical robots are still an emerging technology. But forces such as health-care reform, the shortage of doctors and nurses, and the skyrocketing costs of hospital care are driving its acceptance like never before. Robo-Surgeon But its about more than just saving money. Advocates of robotic surgery, for example, claim the da Vinci surgical robot achieves significantly better outcomes than either radiation or traditional surgery in delicate procedures such as radical prostatectomy for prostate cancer. They say robotic surgery can remove more cancerous tissue with less disruption of adjacent nerve endings than other methods, helping to reduce cancer recurrence and retain sexual function. Thats why some 85% of men undergoing prostate cancer surgery are choosing medical centers that offer robotic surgery. Introduced in 1999, the da Vinci system remains the standard robotic system for complex operations in cardiac, colorectal, gynecologic, thoracic, urologic, and head and neck surgeries. The U.S. Food Drug Administration continues to approve its use in additional surgical applications. From Day One, when I sat down at that robotic console, I knew we would give patients a better outcome, said Florida surgeon Vipul Patel in a New York Times interview. Coordinated by a team of volunteers from ASME's Global Communities and the Engineering Research and Technology Development (ERTD) staff who support volunteer programming, a series of targeted leadership workshops will bring training directly to international ASME member leaders outside of North America. The international efforts began earlier this month with a training workshop that was co-located with the operating board meeting for District G, a unit that encompasses Asia and the Pacific. Similar events will take place around the world through this coming year, with Europe's District H meeting May 25 and the Latin America and Caribbean's District I planning for September, with dates to be announced. By co-locating its 2013 international training events with District Operating Board meetings, ASME ensures that the international leaders who can most benefit from this programming can participate without additional cost to their units or strain on their time. ASMEs volunteer leaders can then return to their units and countries to pass on their new knowledge for improved services for all members. Building on ASMEs popular Leadership Training Conferences, the programming will be created and presented by fellow members who share experiences and best practices for success along with other essential information. At the District G event in Malaysia, participants gained insight into strategic planning for units, executing events to support the goals of ASME and their sections, opportunities for increasing community through the coming Phase 2 of ASME.org, and the always-essential volunteer recruitment. In addition to workshops and plenaries, attendees had the opportunity to network with their peers and share ideas and best practices from around the District. Yash Gupta, who served as both select track chair at the Leadership Training Conference in St. Louis earlier this spring and as one of the volunteer organizers and a presenter for multiple sessions at the District G training event, was very excited about the impact of these events on ASMEs global participants: Were very focused on international participation, Gupta said, and this is great local programming that supports that goal.
